Coloring Large Areas with Markers.

One question we get asked is, "What do you use to color with to get such vibrant colors?"  It's
not easy to answer because many different methods are used.  Some people are not ready to
invest in Copic markers and want some info. One of my favorite methods for large areas is coloring with
Tombows (others will probably work) and pulling the color out with water.  I use the water barrel
brushes.  Here are some simple to follow instructions:
(1) Use paper that will allow you to blend the colors.  I use the paper called Shimmer that we
carry online.  It actually works better than some that I've seen labled for "watercolor."

(2) Outline the cat with Black Tombow as shown.
(3) Using a water barrel brush filled with water, pull the color from the edges toward the center.
IMPORTANT NOTE:  Do not stop till you are done, working back and forth so that none of the
edges dry out.  If it dries out at any point there will be a distinct water mark that is hard to get rid of.

The pumpkin was done just a little differently, with more area colored with the marker and a second
color added to give it a blended two color look.

Tombows used:
Black N15, Orange 925, Yellow025
Background paper: Graphic 45 Le Cirque

Black and white dotted ribbon was used and the dots colored to coordinate with colors used.
The cats eyes have a dab of Viva Glass Effects (clear) which gives a nice effect.
Dots of gold Viva Pearl Pen in the swirls of the pumpkin also added a nice effect.
Another hint: when you looking for vibrant color, color in your area, then color over it again with the
same color or sometimes a different color.  Experiment with this, you will be pleased with the results!

Eat Drink & Be Scary Jack-O-Lantern

I told you last week I would give you some brief instuctions for the Jack 'O Lantern Card.  We
designed the pumpkin and the hat especially to be used for Zentangle but it is also great for just
coloring in.  By the way if you haven't tried Zentangle, take a look at, it's lot's of fun.  Go to instructions
on our site and scroll down to Halloween Zentangle to get an idea of what can be done with these
imanges.  Our posy stamps are also great for this!  We have Zentangle books on our site for purchasing.
This time I decided that I wanted to play with Smooch Paints.  If you haven't tried them I think you are missing out.  They give a nice mettallic look.  They are especially good for small areas.  The tiny brush that comes with it is great for getting into small areas, but as you can see they cover large areas as well.
The hat was painted with Tuxedo (black), Grape Soda (purple) for the band and the buckle was done with Sundance.  The pumpkin was blended with the color Pumpkin and Sundance.  I really did not know that you could blend Smooth but it worked well to create a little shading.  The leaf  was done with Apple Green.  Jack's face was done with Tuxedo.  I used Smooch's Top Coat over the Tuxedo on the hat to give it a slight sparkle look.  This Top Coat can be used over any of you coloring to give a subtle sparkle.  It creates a nice effect.  Try it on butterflies and dragonflies.  The star was colored with Tombow markers and glitter added.
The moon was punched from a Marvy 2 1/8" punch. I used colored card stock and added glitter
after I stamped the saying.  Once again I used paper from the Graphic 45 paper pack Le Cirque for the striped background and layered it onto black card stock and Bazzill Copper.
Again I applied dots of  Pearl Pen (gold) to the ribbon.  I'm really liking this little technique, it really
brings your ribbon to life.  Dimensional Silicone was used to raise to hat in the middle. The ends were glued down with The Ultimate.

Funky Holiday Color Themes and Changing Ribbon Colors to Match

A while back we needed to fill in a spot on our Valentine display board.  I took this great Layered Heart (I-696) that Michael Trent created and put it on a different background paper (sorry Michael but we needed a different color scheme).  I love, love the coloring and layering he did!  Who says Valentines have to be red and white?   I took the black with white dot ribbon and colored the dots to match the ones on the paper. It's a little hard to see in the photograph, but quite a nice touch when you see the actual card.

Then I took the Wide Pumpkin Outline(G-1092) and Witch's Hat Outline(H-1090) that I had colored and put them on a background paper that was not so traditional.

Both of these papers came from the Graphic 45 paper pad Le Cirque.  There are some nice papers in this pack, don't be afraid of the clowns!  These are double sided papers and there are some very traditional designs on the other sides.
Changing the ribbon colors has become fun for me at the moment.  Don't feel limited to ribbon colors just as you see them.

We have several shear ribbons in different colors that have white dots on them. These dots can be colored in with Copic markers to coordinate you color scheme. To go one step further, dot them with Pearl Pens. Wow, does this add a great dimension to the ribbon and your card!

The red/green and black/orange ribbons were
done  with Pearl Pens on both sides.  It's very stunning for a bow or just a border on a card, which is what I did on the pumpkin card.  I dotted gold pearl pen onto a brown ribbon.

A helpful hint.... tape your ribbon down when doing this to keep it from jumping around.
Next week I'm hoping to give you some brief instruction for the pumpkin card using Smooch Paint.
